Spirituality

The exploration of spirituality and spiritual care options may prove to be a beneficial aid and form of healing support for people experiencing pain. Reading, praying, going to church and meditating are just some of the ways one can access the spiritual side of their lives.

These articles may help you think about pain and the physical experience in a different way.
About John C. Oakley, MD
John C. Oakley, MD, (1946-2006) was a pioneer in pain medicine. A brilliant neurosurgeon, he brought the most sophisticated technologies to help people with pain. John also recognized that spirituality could be an important part of healing. He was a deeply religious and well-informed Lutheran and was particularly interested in Native American spiritual traditions. John was loved by his patients and respected by his colleagues. His life was tragically cut short in a plane crash but his legacy of kindness, curiosity and adventure continues in the work and spirit of the hundreds of colleagues, friends, patients and family members he inspired. This Center attempts to honor him by looking closely at the ways in which medicine and spirituality can work together to help those in pain.

The John Oakley Pain and Spirituality Center features information and the opportunity for dialogue about how spirituality can help in healing and living with pain. There is no question that pain affects individuals physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually and that there are things we can do in each of these dimensions to live better lives with pain. There is a wealth of knowledge that we can share as people have a wealth of experience that can benefit others. The Pain and Spirituality Center promotes that exchange of information, caring, experience and understanding. We hope you find it helpful.
