Access Matters: Making Sense of Health Coverage

If you have a hard time making sense of health insurance or if you struggle because you don't have adequate coverage, you're not alone. It's important to get organized and play an active role in managing your healthcare and related finances. As part of its commitment to improving access to timely pain management, APF is proud to unveil a new booklet, Access Matters: Making Sense of Health Coverage. This booklet provides general information about: various types of health insurance and programs, things to should consider when comparing health plans, how to protect and get the most from your coverage and resources and tips to advocate for your pain care.

Annual Reports

We are pleased to report on the many accomplishments that the American Pain Foundation, our network of volunteers and our partners have achieved to help improve the treatment of pain in America. Whether it's through advocacy, education and support or research promotion, we are working hard to make sure pain management is on the local, state and national agendas.

APF Report: Provider Prescribing Patterns and Perceptions - Identifying Solutions to Build Consensus on Opioid Use in Pain Management

APF convened a roundtable of leading pain experts to discuss the ongoing challenges surrounding optimal opioid therapy and pain management. Esteemed participants issued an urgent call to the pain community to begin to reframe the discussion about opioid therapy in a way that incorporates a more balanced perspective of the benefits and risks of these medications. This thoughtful and lively discussion also served as a springboard for future programming to encourage greater collaboration and consensus about opioid therapy and about prescriber patterns and perceptions.

Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Mending the Break in the Continuum of Care

The American Pain Foundation (APF) is proud to release its report “Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Mending the break in the continuum of care.” This 24-page document builds upon our initial call to action released last fall and summarizes discussions, including recommendations and areas of consensus that emerged from the February 23, 2010 roundtable organized by APF. The event, held at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, drew participants from nationally renowned medical institutions and professional and consumer advocacy organizations.
